As we navigate the waters of this new normal that we live in, some of us struggle with being cooped up at home. Cabin fever is a real thing but it's important that we stay positive through this. You've heard it before, but I'll say it again - we're all in this together and we must each do our part to keep us all safe and healthy.
So, here are some things you can do while you're stuck at home.
WRITE
You know as a writer that I had to go there. If you typically work outside the home, use this time to get those stories written! Set a block time when you have some quiet time - maybe at night after the kids have gone to bed, maybe early in the morning before everyone wakes up. Carve out that time and get some words down.
For me, it's easiest when I write in sprints. I typically write 20 minutes at a time until I reach my word count. When I do sprints, the writing seems to go much quicker. Often times, I write a lot more when I do sprints.
LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE
There are several good apps you can download right to your phones. My family uses DuoLingo. We love the short lessons. And don't forget about Sign Language! There are apps for learning ASL, too. Imagine going back to school and work having learned how to sign a few things or being able to converse more easily with classmates or co-workers. It's a win!
READ
Of course this is on my list! Many of us have a huge To Be Read pile! I'm no exception. Use the time to get caught up on your reading. It's easy to sit in front of the tv but it is so rewarding to sit down with a good book and get lost in a new world. We forget that sometimes with our day-to-day rat race and busy routines. So, dig out that book and get reading.
MAKE SOMETHING NEW
If you have the ingredients and don't have to shop for it, or you can order it online for delivery, try learning to make something new. Body scrubs, moisturizers, hand sanitizer, face masks, natural bug repellent for gardens. Learn to crochet or knit and make a scarf - or go all out and make a blanket! Or hey, plant a garden.
ORGANIZE
Since you have time on your hands, get organized. We need to clean our houses anyway, right? Use the time to organize those closets, under the bed, kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Clean in places you haven't cleaned in month (or maybe years). Now's the time!
BONUS!
Sometimes we like to just go crazy! Put on some upbeat music and dance it out like Meredith and Cristina from Grey's Anatomy. Sometimes you just have to do something totally unproductive and fun. Play games inside - play hide and seek, play find the object, play Simon Says.
In these times, we need to be creative. Now is the time to reunite with your family members. Talk to them, do things with them.
Here's wishing you all a safe and happy confinement as we traverse these uncertain times. Stay positive and carry on.
Oh, and don't hoard!
